Friday Fun & Games: Time to Win Some Prizes Again
Welcome Friday Funsters! Time to win some more prizes. Glad so many people are enjoying this game and want to keep it going. Here's this week's game:
Who doesn't love circles? Some people love circles very much and are building a big one. How big? The circumference is over 26,000 meters, cutting through two countries. Who is building this circle and where they heck are they putting it?
First person to answer in comments gets some Lego bookcovers - just in time for Back to School days!
If you don't have a Vox account and would like to play, just let me know and I'll send one your way.

I figured that the huge circles must be a particle accelerator (I grew up near Fermilab) so did a Google News Search and found out that CERN is building a "27-kilometer-long" particle collider near Geneva, Swizerland. It will cross the boarder between France and Swizerland.
I thought that CERN already had this up and running, but I discovered that it won't be in operation until November, 2007.
Don't worry about the "tiny black holes"* this may create. Scientists say they probably won't destroy the world. (Where's Robert Langdon when you need him?)
*Actually, I think that CERN already has produced a huge black hole. (at least when it comes to my time -- I log on and entire hours of my day are lost forever.)

Read all about the Large Hadron Collider in the August issue of symmetry.
symmetry is the quirkiest magazine about particle physics you are likely to come across. Plus, you can subscribe to the print version for free. Your tax dollars at work!
Dona, email me your address and I'll get your prize in the mail (and also mail the last couple of prizes I owe people!) :)
A side note about Fermilab - my dad was in the US Navy in the late forties and early fifties. He has been bugging me about trying to find whatever happened to his ship, the USS Roanoke. I recently discovered that it was torn into big pieces and buried at Fermilab for protection against radiation from the accelerator. My brother lives only blocks from Fermilab, so we like to think dad's ship is protecting my brother and his family.
