Last week I finally finished getting all the odds and ends out of the old house. It's the last 5% that takes forever!
We considered ourselves lucky to find it almost exactly four years ago and had a lot of good times there. It is over 100 years old and was originally a barn before being converted into a duplex. It looks like a standard old house from the outside, but has amazing detail work within. In fact, when we first called the landlord to set up a viewing he pleaded with us not to just drive off when we got there and saw the outside, because he was having work done to restore that as well.
It is in the center of downtown and was walkable to everything - especially the library, which was just a few steps away. On the minus side, that meant it was a bit loud - especially in warmer weather with windows open. Also, there is no yard space to speak of, and while you were close to parks it is nice to have a least a few square feet where you can do your own thing once in a while.
Many more details and pictures in the photo collection:
We've been staying at the new house for a week or so, but yesterday was the day we rented the truck and loaded it up with all the big/bulky stuff and tried to empty the old place out as much as possible. We'll have to go back and pick up a few boxes of odds and ends (plus haul a massive amount of stuff to Goodwill), but overall it was a successful and productive day. I only put 10 miles on the truck all told - a definite advantage to the cross-town move.
Now when I can't find something, at least I know what house it's in.
On the way to return the truck I stopped at a scrap metal yard and dropped off the sheet metal from the remains of the wrecked backyard shed. I didn't get any money for it, but at least I didn't have to pay to get rid of it at the dump.
I have now lived in Maine for over six years, four of those in the same town. I guess I am settled in :)
Hopefully this post will mark the end of the post-drought my blog has been experiencing for a while. Barely a trickle of camera-phone posts has kept it alive! I have a decent excuse (this time) - we just purchased a new house! So there were weeks of searching and viewing, followed by weeks of paperwork and inspections, and we are in the middle of weeks of painting rooms and making trips to home improvement stores and moving things over. It is just about 1.5 miles from our current abode, so it is definitely the shortest hop we've ever done.
I will of course have lots more to write about, but just wanted to let everyone know I am still around and things are good :)
