Here I am in NYC on New Year's Eve:
Twelve feet high, deep and wide, and painted in green and purple iridescent urethane, 2001 is anenigmatic shape-shifter; its contour and color change with the viewer’s angle and the overall light conditions so that it seems to be both at rest and undergoing metamorphosis.

Pictures from walking around NYC yesterday afternoon. The dog is in
Central Park; the spaceship-looking thing that I'll have to find info
about is just outside the park. We also explored Central Park Zoo, the
Apple store on 5th, Times Square, saw the big Christmas tree and
strolled through Bryant Park. Lunch was at Tang Pavillion, which I can
recommend as a great place for some sit-down Chinese food if you find
yourself in midtown.
It was a beautiful day in the city and a relaxed way to wrap up 2006.

A couple of NYC-centric entries to my gift book collection tonight:
Know someone heading to NYC this Christmas? Know someone who misses NYC at Christmas? Know someone who would like a momento of their trip to NYC at Christmas? Try Christmas in New York: A Pop-Up Book.
This book came out last year, so everyone doesn't have it already :)

What was your most memorable or favorite school field trip?
Let's go with most memorable, but in an unpleasant way. Because who wants to read about a nice stroll around a museum?
In tenth grade, we took a day trip down to NYC to see Biloxi Blues on Broadway. For lunch we had fast food, which either gave me the fastest case of food poisoning ever, or triggered some sort of lurking stomach virus. Either way, as we were crossing a street I had the irresistible urge to empty my stomach and threw up immediately, in the middle of the crosswalk. The good part? I had been in the back of the crowd, so no one from my group saw it happen. Then, crossing the next street while still disoriented a bit, I stepped off the curb and was nearly run down by a bike messenger.
The play itself was amusing.
Ok, for a good memorable field trip: in 8th grade (I think) I went with a few other students up to Albany to interview some politicians (Nick Spano, I believe. Would this video exist anywhere?). I don't really recall why I was in the group that did this. Probably chosen at random. Anyway, at the same time, there was some sort of technology/science thing going on. The one exhibit I remember was some folks using a lightpen hooked up to whatever the latest Apple computer was at the time. Probably the //e. I got to try it out myself and being able to draw directly onto the screen definitely contributed towards my love of computers and the cool things they could do. When I returned home, I searched for a lightpen for my Atari computer, and ended up getting a Koala Pad, which was lots of fun. (Random aside: Koala Paint used the term "prairie fire fill" for what ended up being called "flood fill" in most graphic applications. I still sometimes fall back to saying "prairie fire".)
