Not mentioned on the Team Vox blog for the last release, but important (to me) were the fixes put in place for Vox on mobile devices. Or at least, on my mobile device (hiptop/sidekick 3). Initially, Vox didn't do anything special for the hiptop browser - which was fine because the regular site rendered nicely as it was. But then they moved to strip things down and make things faster for phone browsers (good) but they went a little overboard because you couldn't read entire posts anymore. But this last release strikes a pretty good balance between stripping things down but keeping everything functional. Let's take a look screen by screen:
Here is the Vox front page. Graphics are stripped down to just the logo, and some stylesheet info is preserved, giving us the blue background areas and font, etc. (click images for full-sized screenshots)
Hello neighbors! Above is the screen I use most often. Posts are stripped down to title/author/link/date. Personally, I'd prefer more of the regular functionality - completely loading the most recent Neighbor posts, but I understand whey they went with this. Note the logo graphic at top is replaced by text.
Unfortunately, as seen above, the Neighbor's Photos page is not very at-a-glance useful. I'd like to see this fixed as the individual blog posts screen shows that displaying a pic thumbnail is possible.
So here is a blog post, which includes the embedded pic, and comments. No complaints here. But what is that (0) after the post title? Obviously, it is not the comment count (2 comments for this post).
Here is a typical blog (mine in this case): you get title, subtitle, but none of the excellent design of the desktop versions. Here's your next contest idea Team Vox: design a sparse but stylish default mobile theme! Images in posts are not displayed, making pic-only posts nonsensical.
So for me mobile Vox is entirely useful, but I wouldn't mind seeing a few improvements in the presentation (and I am sure the next version will be even better!)
